Winning the Nominated Charity for the Office: Kidney Care UK!
I WON!
This is outstanding news! I cannot believe it. I won the employee voted charity nomination in my office. This means that any fundraising donations made over the year will be given to my chosen charity which was Kidney Care UK.
Why Kidney Care UK?
Kidney Care UK is the largest patient focused charity for kidney disease and they run the YAKG residential weekend that I keep on writing about! I've been doing a lot of reflecting these past few weeks, as always, and I genuinely feel like the first YAKG weekend I went to last year was such a BIG turning point for me and really changed both the quality and perspective on life. Going again this year really just bolstered my confidence once again and I've never felt more like myself since starting dialysis.
My nomination was my way of giving back but also to try and get me more involved at my office again. I'm so grateful that I am able to perform dialysis at home and remote work from home. The pandemic normalised this practice of remote working, which I benefitted greatly as I transitioned to working from home full time even after the pandemic had passed. Despite working in teams on MS teams everyday, remote working left me isolated and disconnected from society.
Hence, when I saw the opportunity for a small role in the office as the charity relationship manager alongside the existing CSR team for the nominated charity, I thought I could use it as trampoline into becoming more connected with my office community whilst doing some good in the kidney community, which I am have become increasingly more passionate about!
Overall, I am so happy to be able to bring light to this lifelong and incurable disease that is so hidden from society to greater public awareness!
